Haunted Sheboygan? Do You Have a Story?

The recent press article about vandals in the Glenbeulah cemetery got me thinking about hauntings, etc.  Do you think Sheboygan County has any haunted history?  We all know of the cemetery mentioned in the article, but are there any other attractions or locations that have a haunted “tag” on them?

Just doing a quick search on Google, I was able to find the following links that have additional information regarding haunts in Sheboygan County.

There are a couple of stories regarding the “Spanish House” in Sheboygan and some stop sign story that I really never understood.  The stories have been around and have changed over the years, but I thought in the spirit of the Halloween season, I would see if anyone had their own haunting stories to share.

I have been interested in the paranormal for about 5 years now and really have never had any experiences that blew my hair back.  I am not sure if I would want to see something paranormal, but when I think about it, I do get excited.

There are plenty of shows on TV to feed your need for paranormal activity as well.

  • Ghosthunters on SciFi – Wednesdays at 8pm
  • Most Haunted on Travel Channel – Fridays at 7pm
  • Paranormal State on A&E – Mondays at 9pm

There are more shows available, but these three are the best if you want to see real footage caught on tape.  The rest of the shows deal more with stories and re-enactments, which don’t really do me any good.

Do you have any good ghost stories or photos to share?

  1. Did you get anymore info on the Spanish house? I am trying to research it and am not coming up with a lot of info.

    Thanks

    Lisa

  2. I have no information on this house at all. I just recently started looking it up myself. I think it’s more of a story than an actual haunting.

If you find anything out let me know.

  3. actually the story behind it is that the people there was this family, husband, wife, and child, and the husband killed the kid and the wife and threw the wife’s head at the stop sign down the street…now the stop sign apparently bleeds on halloween and i havent seen that but if you look at it, it has stains on it that look like blood had been running down it….thats all i have heard

  4. hey
ive got information from the sheboygan police department and the library stating that no murders were ever commited at the spanish house which is named ranchos de la floras or something like that
but truely i dont believe them i think maybe there covering something up but i beleieve its been torning down now im going to explore it now

  5. The spanish house is a great historical location. It was originally a farm house owned by the Schuhardts, the orignators of the “Sugar” ice cream cone. There is a lot of history there if you look for it, try the Sheboygan County Historical Society.

  6. First of all I would love to know more about the Spanish house if anyone finds info. It seems like everyone that has said something knows about pieces of the story I know. It was called ranchos de la floras (or whatever) meaning house of the flowers. I had also heard that the man was a doctor but who really knows right? It was said that the doctor went mad and killed his child/children and then killed his wife while removing her head to throw it at the stop sign down the street. If you go there today, you will find that someone has painted the sign to look like blood spalter! I actually just went down that street for a garage sale being held on that street and started talking to the lady running it. This is what she had told me. She had said that a man bought the house and it is in fact torn down now, I saw it with my own eyes. The house was not in good shape from kids breaking in, animals and years with no one living in it. She also told me that the man who bought it had people check the land. These people had said there was some sort of sprites on that land. She also told me that the man is going to build a new house in the very same spot. I don’t know what is really true. This is what I have heard. That so called neighbor is glad that it was torn down hoping that there will be less traffic. I know as a teen I went down that road myself at night and got creeped out with the stories and the cemetary across the street. (guilty!) That same lady also told me that the lady of the house out lived the man and she is the one that actually got rid of the house. Was it now? Years back who knows? This is all that I have know from hearing.

  7. i seen the guy in the cemetery and the blood on the stop sign and he walked towards are car and his face was white and then turned pitch black!

  8. Are you guys talking about the stop sign thats in the neighborhood of the mall? When I was in high school someone drove me past a stop sign and told me that there were blood stains on it from “some murder”. I did see stains. It was dark and the stains reflected off the sign from the headlights. Funny thing is..when you looked closely at the sign there was no visible stains but if you drove by it the headlights from the car would produce a “splatter” on the sign. Maybe some optical illusion but either way..it was creepy at the time.

  9. Well, I am a person who can see ghosts. I dont care if you dont agree. But my current house is right by Moose Park. My house is haunted badly. In my pantry you will get a tap on the shoulder at night around the hours of 11pm and 4pm. Also when leaving you feel like you are being followed until you turn around. In my bedroom the word ‘one life’ appered. The window one night had a hand banging on it and hit so hard my window was cracked. The Living room had objects moved. chairs where circled around my couch

  10. The stop sign is covered in paint and egg whites. It’s not blood. You can even see the finger prints from where someone reached overhead to smear the paint on the sign. The egg whites are from people pelting the sign with eggs. That’s why it looks like it bleeds when you shine a light at it. I do get a kick out of all the stories about the stop sign and the people that claim to have seen ghosts there, but there is not one piece of documentation to back any of it up. I get calls ALL THE TIME about so and so who claims he or she “Saw a ghost at the stop sign” on such and such a date, yet they NEVER have any evidence of it. As someone who did “Ghost hunts” as a kid before even getting into paranormal research, I can tell you that we always took at least one piece of equipment to document with. I don’t know anyone that didn’t. The fact that the accounts of what the “ghosts” looked like or what they did are always different further blows away the already paper thin credibility of the claims. It’s an urban legend that has been popular since I was a kid and no matter how many times it’s been debunked, people seem unable to accept it as a legend. It’s also COMPLETELY unrelated to the Spanish House.

As for the Spanish House itself, it was a beautiful building until a bunch of idiots decided it would be “So cool” to break into it for a thrill, thereby destroying the place in the process. Do yourselves a favor and actually research a location first. Get the REAL history and take the urban legends for what they are: Legends. ALWAYS GET PERMISSION before you go ANYWHERE to investigate and if it’s a public place, ALWAYS FOLLOW THE LAW TO THE LETTER and leave when the place closes.

  11. Hey Steven. Thanks for debunking of the stop sign myth. It’s amazing that after countless episodes of numerous different ghost hunter type shows that people still blindly believe anything. Have you contacted that person that posted ahead of you? Those sound like interesting claims! By the way, I’d love to investigate with you guys. I would talk about it on the air and blog it.

    Let me know.

    Dangerous Dave.

  12. Thanks for all the comments people. I think there must be some haunts in the city, maybe we need to talk to some of the older folks around town.

Keep the paranormal alive, let’s find more information.

  13. The Spanish House in Sheboygan has a creepy feeling to it, definitely. It’s not open for trespassing but a few years ago, my friend and I snuck in to take pictures. It’s very run down but beautiful. I don’t believe the story of the husband killing his family, but I have seen the stains on the sign. You can’t see them in the day, but if you shine your headlights at it at night, you’ll see them. However, I’ve seen the same stains on many signs around the state and I don’t believe it’s anything paranormal. I’ve lived in plenty of haunted houses and psychism runs in my family. Myself and my brother inherited it through our mother. I felt a presence there, but nothing extremely shocking. Sorry to disappoint. Just an old town legend. It’s also said that if you have your radio on and you pull into the garage, it’ll change to Spanish music. Tried that, and it’s not true.

  14. I worked at city streets resturant when I was was a teen ,then it was located on top of the first national bank on 8th street
The stories of the janitor are very true I have seen things that well to this day freak me out, ghosts, a blueish head that I saw very clearly then it was gone,Some kind of lightning , voices and thats was just what I saw. The owner of city streets im sure has alot of sightings.. the bottom floor on the service elevator is was the worst or best depending on how you look at it…

  15. There is more than one story to the house rancho de las flores. And you have the stop sign mixed up in with those stories. Its a separate one having to do with an indian man killing his family or something like that. But rancho de las flores has the mexican legend behind it and then there’s a story about a man and a wife who lived in that house, the man a doctor held many exotic animals and was getting the venom to cure people. I don’t remember what happened with the couple but I think they have both passed on. The house, sadly, has been torn down and the land is now up for sale and costs a fortune.

  16. The house has been torn down.

  17. Actually. Recently about maybe a year ago. The Spanish house was taken down! Yeah. Just a flat land now. But when it was still up. My and my brother would go there really late. We’d drive there in our manual car and stop by it. We would look at the house. Discuss if it really is haunted or not. Then turn the car back on and go. But when we tried to turn the car on, it started..but then it died. It wouldnt turn on. He turned the keys trying to get the car back on, but it wouldn’t. After a couple of tries he finally got it back on and we left in a hurry. But now, like I said, it has been torn down. Just land. No more fence. Just land..

  18. I’ve known about the spanish house since i was about 10 years old (35+ years) when i was a kid we used to set up barrels of beer at the end of that road, i walked through the woods next to the house on the rail road tracks, we have partied in the cemetery across the street. point is i have spent a lot of time in the area of that house, and yes one night even decided to go in(without vandalizing the place) And never ever have i seen anything strange that would lead me to believe it was haunted. i think after researching its nothing but made up stories. Don’t you think if there was a murder that gruesome there would be some kind of news report? Yes it is creepy at night but again i think that’s mostly due to the hype. I’ve also spent a few hours in the very early AM in the glenbeulah cemetery from about 2 am to 3:30 am and saw NOTHING. If anyone has solid fact on either one of these places I’d love to hear about it, until then i think its a load of BS. (sorry folks)
