So, What is Really Wrong in Sheboygan?
Trust me, I KNOW you don’t follow this blog because you like to read about my 2 cents on Sheboygan County. You don’t have to lie to me, really. After reading some of the “great” stories throughout 2009, I really only have ONE question and that is:
What is Really Wrong in Sheboygan?
Do you have an answer? Well, of course you do. Every one that lives in the city, or visits the Press forum knows exactly what is “wrong” with Sheboygan. I think you can get my sarcasm. People jump to conclusions, post ignorant, hateful comments all day long on Press articles. Others run their mouths, point fingers from this guy to that guy, but really what is the issue?
Is it the crime wave, sorry DRUG TYPHOON, that has been barreling down on Sheboygan over the last 10 years? Is it because nobody gives a damn about anything unless it affects them? We as people that live in the county have seen some weird things happen, scratch our heads when we see the city do something unexpected (ala Blue Harbor), or even yell at someone because clearly, you can raise a better child than those that appear weekly in the Press articles.
My point is that none of us are really ever going to know what the problem is. All we can do is try to better our community in any way that we know how to. It might start with the education of a child, how are the school systems? Why can’t parents be more involved in their child’s lives? The gangs don’t HAVE to be the parent.
One of the first things that I think of when I read an article like THIS ONE is “Why can’t the Press report on something else?”. Only going back about 15 years, you didn’t read about stuff like this in the paper, why do we HAVE to read about it now? I would say that it’s because the article titles sell more papers, but we know how that is going for newspapers all across the world. Maybe the COMMUNITY of Sheboygan County would be better if they read about the good things that were happening.
There are positive things that happen in Sheboygan. I recently had an individual come to me and ask if he could post about the GOOD things that are happening around the city. Yes I said, that would be great. And I think that the overall outcome is positive. Point the children in the right direction, that’s all you can do.
Why is the drug problem so bad in Sheboygan?
Is it because there are less cops? The cops we have are bad and cannot catch the drug dealers? Are the judges bad for letting repeat offenders back out on the streets only to cause more havoc? What about our lucky citizens that get out on bail while waiting for their court date and COMMIT more crimes?
So, I am going to follow up on this post with something a bit more positive. Stay tuned.

Sheboygan (city) has been, for the majority of it’s history, a blue collar manufacturing city. Good hard working people who like to blow off a bit of steem after a hard day at the factory. They might not have had extra income or energy to afford or upgrade thier modest homes and besides, what was the point? Vanity? This became the mind set- Get your high school diploma, Get a good factory job, find a honey, have kids, buy a home and repeat. The expansion of manufacturing jobs in the 60’s- 80’s might have increased the population of Sheboygan but did nothing to expand the ideaology of it’s people. People here seem to be stuck on “good enough”.
The influx of people from different cultures in the last 20 years, along with the decrease in manufacturing jobs has put this community into a bit of a tale spin. Sheboyganites have not learned to adjust. In order to transform, grow and suceed, The goals need to change- a high school education is no longer acceptable, factory jobs are not the only answer and your new nieghbors might be able to teach you a thing or two.
Look into new ways to make or spend your income. Some cultures encourage people to suceed by conbining households. This reduces housig costs, food costs, child care and transportation costs. It also reduces certain typs of stress, since you not not responsible for the whole fuctioning of the household. So you have a choice: complain about your neighbors getting ahead, while your busy working your self to death, or find out WHY your nieghbors are getting ahead. Do they have a second job? Are they sharing child care?
Be friendly. Poeple are less likely to vandlize or steal from someone they know and like. Plus, chances are your nieghbors are probably home when your not. They will notice if some one is there who shouldn’t be.
Work on your skill set. Every one is good at something. Can you teach? Knit? Are you good at math? Work from your skill set to gain extra income and develope community ties. You may find a career out of your extra efforts and you’ll be doing something you like.
Sheboygan needs to get serious about adapting to the new world market. Not everyone can start a business that employs 4000 people. The majority of employees in the U.S. work for businesses that have less than 100 workers. That means service companies, small manufacters, financial and techical companies. That’s a a lot of diversification! We can not, nor should we, be a nation of restaurants and theme parks, because when things start to tank, these are the first to suffer. Prosperity goes a long way towards reducing crime and encouraging community pride. We can no longer rely on our government (or foreman) to fix the problem. It starts with changing your mind- see the compost and not the manure.
