Public shouldn’t be able to use public parks?

According to Milt Storm’s recent letter to the Sheboygan Press, we shouldn’t allow the public to use the public parks in the city.  How does this work?  If you missed the letter, I will be putting snippets here and commenting on each of them.  First of all, Milt says:

In my honest opinion, our parks were not designed for splinter or special-interest groups to promote their radical and biased political agendas.

Is that what the North High School Gay-Straight Alliance is doing?  I really can’t see why the group shouldn’t be allowed to voice their opinions.  What are the parks for?  Glad you asked, according to Milt:

Fountain Park, as well as all our parks, was established for concert series, for children’s playground activities, for picnics and special events for all ages

Well, that would be nice, if all the parks were used in this way. If a group wants to ask PERMISSION to use the park for a specific purpose, they have that right at least.  The comment to the press basically just shows how homophobic people are.  Read the bible all you want and live your life the way you want, but who is anyone to judge?

Milt goes on to say:

Once we allow a radical or unnatural gay-straight organization with a debatable agenda in our parks, who else do we allow? Drug dealers and street gangs may ask permission.

Well, what I think is that drug dealing and people involved in street gangs participate in illegal activity. What is so illegal about a group (gay/straight or otherwise) using a park for a couple hours to voice some opinions, etc?

When that would become illegal, I think you have a case, otherwise you are just going to have to deal with it.  Making a reference that Sheboygan doesn’t have to be the next San Fransisco really isn’t relevant to your argument considering that SF actually doesn’t have any problem with gays.

You read the comments in the Press Forum, what do you think?
